proof of life
posting something for the sake of having posted something. here are a bunch of outtakes and random crap that i have been meaning to put up. it should be noted that i am aware most people probably don't care about little random leftover recordings, but i figured i'd rather just make everything available.
when i'm a star, you'll see.
you'll all see.

ok. so the past few weeks have been spent sleeping in hotels, cars, empty apartments, on air mattresses, couches, etc. eventually this will be over and i will sit down. shortly after that, i will get a few boxes out of a shed and will resume where i left off. in the meantime, a few more cassette tape things may make their way onto here.
maybe not.
also, a comment got me thinking about the appeal in low fidelity recording.
it's got to be the intimacy. as if you were there the whole time.

sorry to be leaving
truly.
here is a little 3 song EP sort of thing. one song is a reworked version of something that appeared on kidsounds. the other two are very new. written and recorded in the last week or so.
as relocation occurs, recording toys must be placed in boxes and stowed away. figured it'd be best to go ahead and get this out as is, rather than wait for more material to materialize.

updates pt. II
ok. after some [vain] attempts with a new playlist doohickey, i will be going through old posts and just using the archive.org playlist player thang. stay tuned.
(the underlying motive for this post was to make sure my previous, ill-fated post titled "shit" followed by a bunch of html code was no longer shown as the most recent post)

kidsound
this is a 36 minute piece. it was pretty much all recorded on the handheld tape deck. field sounds and mostly unfinished, acoustic numbers. it's all one track as i can't help but feel that's how it just ought to be. i enjoy it. hope someone else does as well. song titles coming soon.
download at archive.org
note: i wouldn't be surprised if a few of these tunes resurface sometime in the future in different forms.

ABC Nicorette
here is something pretty different.
these are a few excerpts from a long of night of jamming with two friends. for the time being, we are calling it ABC Nicorette.
spacy, improv guitar 'n' drums 'n' synth can be downloaded here. or click play, butthead.

nothing is better than you
it's about time.
it's been a while since anything has been finished and posted. this is the newest hodge-podge of songs. some acoustic and some electric. most pretty noisy, made by things of wood and wiring and metal and plastic. i tried to crawl a bit beyond the shell with some of them. i don't know how far i got, but i am fairly pleased with a few.
some recorded digitally, some on tape, some from tape to homemade vinyl back to digital, etc.
notes of non-interest: the original working title was "nothing is better than you, anything would be better than you." -- nothing meaning nothingness.
i reckon there will be another "handholder" tape coming soon chock full of the left overs from this one.

nobody is looking for you
i really don't feel like writing some sort of introduction.
this is a thing that is made up of other things.

handholder vol. II
here is another tape of random junk recorded on the old tape cassette deck. some songs have been on other recordings. some have not. the ones that have been recorded time and time again were really just recorded to give to a friend. these are all just me by my lonesome. listen & download at the archive.
i hate naming songs.
some day you'll look down at your child and say, "you know, i listened to that stuff way back when no one knew about it."
and your child will look up at you and respond, "what are you talking about?"
oh, and i think there will be another little EP or some sort of recording being finished and posted soon, sometime in the next week or two.
oh, other update: i am steadily making progress on improving the sound quality on these homemade records. i've been cutting on super thin polycarbonate sheets, so they're quite flexible/flimsy/fun. if you want one, let me know.

so much for the big plans
so what's been keeping me busy/not posting rubbish? remember that record lathe thing? well, it's up and running now. which means things are now running around in the sub-lo-fi abyss. below-fi? lower-fi?
chlorophyll? more like bore-ophyll.
i've been experimenting with cutting some 7" records on lexan polycarbonate (much thanks to Michael of Secret Message Machine, again). they're starting to come out a bit better each time. of course, any sort of punch-y note ends up with a bit of a bendy-wobbly-is-this-thing-spinning-at-uneven-speeds kinda sound. however, you may notice that voices and some stuff sounds better. i have to adjust the speed to compensate for differences between the lathe and a 45 rpm player.
they're all one-offs. they're square. they're clear.
i may try to play a show sometime. see if i can put this plastic burden on some other folks.
now, to rest on my laurels.
you on the run:

these internets are just a fad. like the yo-yo.
so with all this commotion about web hosts n shit, some things on mediafire may or may not get barfed up like last night's Blatz 'n' fish tacos. it shouldn't, but it might. either way, it doesn't matter much. almost everything is up on archive.org. but should you find something down, let me know and i'll get it back up. shut up. i know what you're thinking.

pterophine
this is the new e.p.
3 songs. 3 days. 30 minutes.
i had been sitting on these three songs for a long time now and had somewhat kept putting off recording them for whatever reasons. maybe they just seemed like they'd be a hassle to record. but in all honesty, i do really enjoy them and they were fun to record (this is the first project since getting a new recorder. digital, but still lo-fi and homemade). so if anyone would like a free cassette of this, just let me know. i hope to be making some soon. and it can even come in the color of your choosing!! (as long as you choose red or yellow)
it felt good to get to record again.

after all, it is the 21st century.
so, i got my new fancy little digital multitrack recorder thingamabob. (apparently spell check recognizes "thingamabob") anywho, i'm bummed to no longer have a functioning multitrack that uses cassettes, but i am excited to get going with the new guy. there were some old recordings i wanted to hear on some of the old tapes. oh well. they probably sucked anyway. i'll just wait until i get the old one fixed or come across another (aka steal one from a friend). just trying to figure out how it operates (it didn't come with a manual and lord knows if it had, i wouldn't use it anyway) and came up with this little thing. i think i'll name it for a friend.
song for mike:
it's two minutes long. i think it took about eight minutes to record.

mailings and findings
UPDATE: check out Michael's record cutting here: Circular Waves. very cool
today, i received a few 7" home-cut records in the mail. shit yeah.
anywho, the records were done by Michael Barrett of Secret Message Machine, out of Greensboro, on his homemade record lathe. he did an awesome job, including a little picture disk of two of his own songs. I strongly encourage anyone to go and check out his music. It's damn good.
Here are a few more links that have some music from some of the great bands out of Greensboro:
Experiment All Music & Subjective Collective
Other than Secret Message Machine, I'd definitely recommend checking out The Raymond Brake, Blank Blank, Embarrassing Fruits, and Summer Camp Casanova. Oh, and Kaleidoscope Death (especially the album Old Man Brown).
and back to all-lower-case.
so after getting turned on to homemade record lathes, i found myself doing some research on how to build one. but then realized i have basically no mechanical knowledge to accomplish such as a task (with any level of moderate success). so i tracked one down in circleville, oh. unfortunately it is winter and i couldn't go to the famous Circleville Pumpkin Patch. apparently growing up in ohio means pumpkins and hay-fights (exactly what it sounds like. kids fighting each other in hay and with hay). those hay-bale mountains were pretty rad.
so yeah, it's gonna take some work, being made in 1939 and all, but i hope to get it up and running in the coming weeks. gonna be cutting so many 7"'s.
